There are several local dishes that you should not miss. Batanes is popular for the scenic views it offers. Aside from this, Batanes also boasts of local dishes that all visitors should try. Here is a short list of what you may want to order from the restaurants there:

COCONUT CRAB.

Coconut crab. Locally known as Tatus, coconut crab is found only in Batanes. They feed on young coconut husks and grow way bigger that the usual crabs. The crab meat is very oily, but if you love sea food, this is a must try!

SEA URCHINS

Sea urchins can be found anywhere in the Philippines. But Ivatans do different ways of preparing this. Sea urchins sell only around Php 25 for a generous serving. Locals say sea urchins are best eaten raw.

Adobo with Palek

Palek refers to the Batanes wine. And this local wine is used to cook an adobo with an Ivatan twist. Instead of vinegar, locals use Palek to add flavor. Interestingly, the wine does not give the dish a bitter taste. It only adds up to the flavor.

Paco Salad

Ivatans serve a lot of vegetables during meal. Paco salad with organic tomatoes and carrots seems heavenly for many people visiting Batanes.

Sauteed Summer Squash

A trip to Batanes would not be complete without trying this Ivatan dish. Bunker Café is popular for serving this. The restaurant is located right in front of the Basco Lighthouse. So you will not just enjoy the food, you will also enjoy the magnificent view!

Turmeric Rice.

This yellow rice is the highlight of a food trip in Batanes. This is popularly served anywhere on the islands. Garlic, onion and turmeric are combined with rice to achieve that subtle ginger flavor. Some restaurants add pork to the rice, but too much as it should be eaten with a viand.
